Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tbsp hot water

Directions:

  1. BASE: Stir together oats, flour, brown sugar, soda, salt, and melted butter.
  2. Pat into a 11x7x1 1/2 baking dish.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
  4. Cool.
  5. SECOND LAYER: Mix sugar, butter and melted chocolate.
  6. Add egg: beat well.
  7. Stir together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  8. Add to chocolate mixture alternately with milk and vanilla.
  9. Stir in chopped nuts if using.
  10. Spread over baked cooled base layer.
  11. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
  12. Cool.
  13. FROSTING: Melt chocolate with butter over low heat, stirring constantly.
  14. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  15. Blend in hot water to make an almost pourable consistency.
  16. Frost brownies.
  17. Cut into 16 bars.
