Mrs. Schneider's Date Nut Bread

Ingredients:

  • 1 (12 oz) package dates, chopped
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup margarine
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup nuts, chopped (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease 2 to 3 loaf pans, line with waxed paper.
  3. In a large sauce pan, combine dates, water, and sugar.
  4. Bring to a boil and boil 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Remove from heat and immediately add butter or margarine.
  6. Cool to room temperature.
  7. Add the beaten eggs.
  8. Stir in remaining ingredients and pour into prepared pans.
  9. Bake 350 degrees for 1 hour (it sometimes takes a bit longer).
  10. Makes 2 - 3 standard sized loaves.
