Pennsylvania Dutch Applesauce Bread

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup applesauce

Directions:

  1. Sift all dry ingredients together into bowl. Cream shortening in another bowl; add sugar ; cream well. Beat in eggs and vanilla; blend in dry ingredients alternately with applesauce. Stir in walnuts.
  2. Pour into well-greased 9 x 5 x 3 baking pan; let rise for 20 minutes. Bake in preheated 350º oven for 55 to 60 minutes. Recipe may be doubled for 2 loaves.
