Apple Cranberry Streusel

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp butter or 6 tbsp margarine
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp orange zest
  • 8 cups sliced apples (about 2 1/2 lb, granny smith or jonathan recommended)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. For streusel topping, combine flour and brown sugar in small bowl.
  3. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.
  4. Stir in walnuts and set aside.
  5. For filling, combine sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt in medium bowl.
  6. Add cranberries and orange zest; mix well.
  7. Add apples to sugar mixture and toss well until evenly coated.
  8. Pour mixture into a 9 inch square baking dish, or casserole dish of suitable size.
  9. Sprinkle evenly with streusel topping.
  10. Bake 50 to 60 minutes, or until apples are tender and streusel is golden brown.
  11. Cool at least 1 hour before serving.
