Red Devil's Food Chocolate Fudge Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or 1/2 cup sour milk
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 tsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • 4 tbsp cocoa

Directions:

  1. Disolve soda in milk and vinegar; set aside.
  2. Mix sugar and shortening until creamy then mix with eggs and vanilla.
  3. Sift flour with cocoa and baking powder.
  4. Mix dry and liquid ingredients together, except the food coloring and water should be added last.
  5. Bake at 375, for 15 to 20 minutes in a 9x13 pan.
  6. Frost with chocolate fudge icing:.
  7. Five minutes before cake is done, place margarine in saucepan; bring to boil, stirring constantly.
  8. Remove from heat; add remaining ingredients.
  9. Beat well and spread on hot cake.
