German Sourdough Bread (No Bread Machine)

Ingredients:

  • 2 (1/4 oz) packages dry yeast
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 4 1/2 cups flour

Directions:

  1. Sourdough:.
  2. Mix yeast with warm water.
  3. Mix yeast mixture with flour.
  4. Let stand for 24 hours at a warm place.
  5. Dough:.
  6. Mix sourdough with warm water, salt, oil and flour.
  7. Knead until smooth and allow to rise for 30 minutes at a warm place.
  8. Knead dough and shape into loaf.
  9. Place loaf on a cookiesheet and let 30 minutes rise.
  10. Cut 2-3 1/4 inch deep slashes into loaf.
  11. Preheat oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit and bake for 1 hour.
