Ingredients:

  • 5 cups thinly sliced granny smith apples (, about 4 medium)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbsp butter or 3 tbsp margarine
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pastry for a double-crust 9-inch pie

Directions:

  1. Combine apples, brown sugar, water and lemon juice in a pot.
  2. Cover and cook over medium heat about five minutes or until the apples are just tender.
  3. Mix flour, granulated sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt and stir into apple mixture.
  4. Cook, stirring constantly until the syrup thickens- about 2 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir vanilla and butter.
  6. Heat oven to 425 degrees.
  7. Prepare pastry.
  8. Turn the apple mixture into the pastry-lined pie pan.
  9. Cover with top crust with slits in it; seal and flute.
  10. Cover the top of the pie with a 2-3 inch strip of aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning; remove foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
  11. Bake 40-45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
