Ingredients:

  • 1 (1/4 oz) package yeast
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening or 1/3 cup lard
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375F and grease baking sheet.
  2. Soften yeast in water.
  3. Sift flour sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a medium sized bowl.
  4. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  5. Pour buttermilk over cereal; mix well.
  6. Add to dry ingredients with yeast mixture.
  7. Mix just until well-moistened.
  8. Drop by heaping tablespoons two inches apart on prepared baking sheet.
  9. Bake 12 to 14 minutes, or until golden.
  10. Serve warm.
