Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Directions:

  1. Mix flour, 2 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, salt and cinnamon together.
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  3. Stir in egg and just enough milk so dough leaves side of bowl.
  4. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface.
  5. Knead lightly 10 times.
  6. Roll dough 1/2 inch thick.
  7. Cut with floured doughnut cutter.
  8. Hold opposite ends of each ring and twirl to form a figure 8.
  9. Place bows and buttons (holes) on ungreased cookie sheet.
  10. Bake until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes.
  11. Dip into melted butter, then into sugar.
  12. I add cinnamon to my sugar usually.
  13. I also put sugar in a plastic bag and gently roll it around with the doughnuts inside after dipping in the butter.
