Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour ,sifted
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 envelope dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • about 1/4 cup milk

Directions:

  1. Sift dry ingredients.
  2. Add anise seeds,set aside
  3. Add yeast to warm water,let stand about 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Combine mixtures,adding oil and enough milk to make a dough the consistency of soft biscuit dough.
  5. Cover and let rest in a warm place until dough rises and is very light.,about 1 to 1-1/2 hours.
  6. Place flour on working area.
  7. Pat the dough about 1/3 thick.
  8. Divide in half,making two balls of dough and press each into a round,buttered baking dish,(a 3 cup size casserole dish would be fine.)
  9. Set aside to rise.
  10. When half risen,make 1/4 inch deep slashes across surface of each loaf,brush with egg-milk mixture.
  11. Allow the dough to continue to rise untll very light,about 1 to 1-1/2 hours.
  12. Place a pan of warm water on the bottom of the oven shelf,then place the loaves on the middle shelf .
  13. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 15 minutes,then reduce temperature to 350 degress and bake for 15 minutes longer,or until test done.
  14. Turn out onto wire rack,and allow to remain until cold,cut into wedges,good with pats of butter,have with your tea or coffee.
