Beggin For More Baklava

Ingredients:

  • pie
  • 4 cups of walnuts
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp clove powder
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Directions:

  1. Crush up the nuts with a food processor until crumbly but not powder
  2. Or by hand
  3. Place in a plastic bag and pound with a heavy based sauce-pan
  4. Mix well with the spices
  5. Layer 4 sheets of filo on the bottom of a baking dish
  6. Lightly paint butter on each sheet as you place them in
  7. Put 1/2 nut mixture on this base of filo
  8. Layer another 4 sheets of filo painted with butter
  9. Place remaining nut mixture on this middle layer of filo
  10. Top with remaining filo pastry also painted with butter
  11. Bake in the oven at 170 for 30 - 40 minutes
  12. Pour over half the syrup (recipe below)
  13. Bake for a further 15 - 20 minutes
  14. Pour syrup over til about 1/2 way up dish
  15. There may be leftover syrup, pour over each serving
  16. SYRUP
  17. While the walnut + pastry pie is cooking
  18. Boil the rest of the ingredients together for 15 minutes
