  1. Stir together sugar, 3/4 cup water, and the basil in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. When the first bubbles appear, reduce heat to medium-low and gently simmer 5 minutes. Let cool, then strain. Keeps up to 1 week, chilled.
