Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Beat powdered sugar, shortening and egg yolks until blended
  3. Stir in flour and ground almonds
  4. Press in ungreased baking pan, 13x9x2 inches.
  5. Bake 15 minutes
  6. Beat milk, lemon juice & vanilla
  7. Stir in cherries
  8. Beat egg whites in small mixer bowl until foamy
  9. Beat in granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time; continue beating until stiff & glossy. Do not underbeat.
  10. Spread cherry mixture over baked layer.
  11. Carefully spread meringue over cherry mixture; sprinkle with diced almonds.
  12. Bake 20 minutes
  13. Cut into bars, 2x1 inch, while warm
  14. Store in refrigerator
