Ingredients:

  • 2 (8 oz) packages dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup shortening

Directions:

  1. Combine yeast and warm water.
  2. Let stand 5 minutes or until bubbly.
  3. Add buttermilk to yeast mixture, and set aside.
  4. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  5. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  6. Add buttermilk mixture, mixing with a fork until dry ingredients are moistened DO NOT OVER MIX!
  7. Turn dough out on a floured surface, and knead lightly 3 or 4 times.
  8. Roll dough to .5 inch thickness.
  9. Cut with a 2.75 inch biscuit cutter, and place on a lightly greased baking sheet, touching each other.
  10. Cover and let rise 1 hour.
  11. Bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes.
