Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1/2 cup baking cocoa
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp confectioners' sugar

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in water. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture and mix well. Add vanilla. In another bowl, beat egg whites on medium speed until soft peaks form. Gently fold into the creamed mixture.
  2. Pour into a 9-in. square baking pan coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350° for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Dust with confectioners' sugar. Yield: 12 servings.
