Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Directions:

  1. Cream shortening in a large mixing bowl; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add egg and vanilla; beat well.
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and nutmeg; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Stir well.
  3. Drop by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool.
