Ingredients:

  • for the birds nest
  • 4 baking apples (granny's or another tart)
  • 1/3 cup. butter
  • 1 1/3 cup. flour
  • 1 cup. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 cup. shortening
  • 2/3 cup. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • for clear sweet sauce
  • 1/2 cup. sugar
  • 1 cup. cold water
  • 1 tblsp. cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tblsp. unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • pinch of salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Birds nest
  3. Melt the butter
  4. Pour into 8 or 9 in.sq. baking dish
  5. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the butter
  6. Peel and slice your apples, smaller than wedges, but not too thin
  7. Place these over the brown sugar
  8. Next, mix the flour, 1 c.sugar, baking powder, 1/2 tsp.salt, shortening, milk and 1 tsp. vanilla, beat 2 minutes
  9. Add the egg, beat 2 minutes more
  10. Pour over the apples
  11. Bake for 40-50 minutes
  12. For clear sauce
  13. Mix 1/2 c. sugar, cornstarch, cold water, and nutmeg in a saucepan
  14. Bring to a boil over med-high heat, whisking constantly
  15. Remove from heat
  16. Add the 1 tblsp. butter and pinch of salt, mix well
  17. Slice the birds nest into squares, place upside down in individual serving dishes, pour clear sauce over the top
