1944- Maple Custard Pie

Ingredients:

  • 1 -1/3 - cups flour
  • 1/2 - tsp salt
  • 1/4 - tsp baking powder
  • 1/2- cup shortening
  • 2- tbsp water
  • 1- tbsp vinegar
  • filling.
  • 3/4 - cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 - tsp salt
  • 3- cups milk .scalded
  • 1/2- tsp maple flavoring

Directions:

  1. PIE CRUST..................
  2. To make pie crust in this 1944 recipe, sift the flour , salt, and baking powder together.
  3. Cut in shortening until it has been evenly mixed.
  4. Stir in chopped walnuts.
  5. Combine water and vinegar, add just enough flour mixture to make a stiff dough.
  6. Place dough in a 9 inch pie tin and flute edges

  8. FILLING ................
  9. Beat the eggs slightly, then add your maple syrup and salt…
  10. Gradually stir in the scalded milk.
  11. Add the flavoring.
  12. Pour the mixture into your unbaked pie shell.
  13. Bake at 450 degrees F. for 10 minutes;
  14. Reduce heat to 350 degrees f. and bake 25 to 30 minutes longer or until the custard is set………
  15. Make sure the pie is cooled before serving
  16. Serves 6-8 depending on size cut
