Ingredients:

  • 1 (1 1/2 oz) package yeast
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp shortening
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk , lukewarm

Directions:

  1. Sprinkle yeast over 1/4 C lukewarm water, DO NOT STIR.
  2. Let stand 5-10 min, stir until yeast is dissolved.
  3. Sift dry ingredients together.
  4. Cut in Shortening.
  5. Stir in buttermilk and yeast.
  6. Shape into a ball on a lightly floured board.
  7. Knead lightly.
  8. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick.
  9. Cut with a floured 2 inch biscuit cutter.
  10. Place half of the rounds on a greased baking sheet.
  11. Brush with melted butter.
  12. Place remaining rounds on top
  13. Brush with melted butter.
  14. Let rise until doubled in bulk.
  15. Bake at 425* for 10-12 min or until golden brown.
