Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. red food color
  • 2 tbsp. strong coffee
  • 1 1/2 cup. sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cup. flour minus 2 tbsp.
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • frosting
  • 4 tbsp. cocoa
  • 4 tbsp. strong coffee
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:

  1. Make paste and set aside.
  2. Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs.
  3. Combine flour, salt, and soda. Add to cake alternately with the sour milk.
  4. Add vanilla, then the paste mixture last. Mix well.
  5. Bake at 350 til tests done with toothpick. (Above bake time is a guess; no temp. or time was on Mom's recipe.)
  6. We always used layer pans, but can use 13x9.
  7. Frosting:
  8. Cream the butter or margarine. Combine the cocoa and sugar. Add gradually, mixing well. Then add vanilla, coffee, and red food color to desired shade. Frost cool cake.
