Ingredients:

  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 cup raisins

Directions:

  1. Beat egg whites (at room temperature) in a large mixing bowl until stiff peaks form. Beat egg yolks in a small mixing bowl until thick and lemon colored. Pour yolks into beaten egg whites, beating until thoroughly blended. Gradually add sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating well.
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves in a medium mixing bowl. Gradually add to egg mixture. Add raisins and walnuts, stirring well.
  3. Drop dough by heaping teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375° for 6 to 8 minutes. Cool slightly on cookie sheets. Remove from cookie sheets, and cool completely on wire racks.
