Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shortening (half of which should be butter)
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 2/3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2/3 cup raisins
  • 2/3 cup chopped nuts

Directions:

  1. Cream shortening and sugar.
  2. Add eggs and beat until fluffy.
  3. Sift flour.
  4. Add salt, baking soda, baking powder, and spices and sift again.
  5. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk to shortening mixture and beat after each addition.
  6. Add nuts and raisins.
  7. For bars: Spread batter into a greased 9x13-inch pan and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
  8. For cookies: Drop by tsp onto greased baking sheet about 2 apart and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Makes 5 dozen.
