Chinese New Year Sugared Walnuts

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 cups walnut halves
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Directions:

  1. In shallow Dutch oven, dissolve sugar in 1/2 cup (125 mL) water over medium-high heat. Add walnuts, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium; simmer, stirring often, until liquid is crystallized and nuts are coated, about 8 minutes.
  2. Spread walnuts on rimmed baking sheet; bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 5 minutes. With wooden spoon, break up nuts; bake, stirring once, until completely dry, about 15 minutes. Let cool. (Make-ahead: Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.) 3 cups.
