Chile Cheese Bread

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages rapid rise yeast
  • 1/2 cup hot water , from the sink
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 cups of flour

  • 1 egg

Directions:

  1. Pour hot water into a measuring cup, and add yeast; stir to
  2. Dissolve.
  3. In a large bowl, Pour in yeast. Stir in sour cream, butter, sugar, eggs and salt. Add flour; stir until smooth.
  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. The next morning, with mixer, cream the cream cheese and add egg and beat until smooth and set aside.
  6. Punch down the dough, turn out on a floured surface and lightly knead the dough 8 times
  7. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Turn out 1 portion onto a floured surface, and roll into a 12x8 rectangle.
  8. Spread with 1/6 of the cream cheese.
  9. Place a line of chile slice halves 2 in from the bottom edge on the long side of the rectangle.
  10. Roll up (jelly roll style) starting with the side the chiles are on and seal the seem by pinching it and roll the ends under.
  11. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet. 2 loaves per baking sheet.
  12. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.
  13. Using scissors, cut 3/4 deep cuts into the sides of each loaf at 3/4 intervals, alternating from one side to the other.
  14. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, one last time, about 40 minutes.
  15. Make an egg wash with the egg and water. Brush the top of loaves with the egg wash.
  16. Heat the oven to 375*, then bake the bread loaves for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  17. Cool 10 minutes befor removing to wire racks.Serve while they are still hot. Refrigerate leftovers.
  18. NOTE OF CAUTION; Wear rubber or latex gloves when handling the chiles. And be careful not to rub your eyes.
