Challah II With Maple Syrup Glaze (Eggless Version)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tsp yeast
  • 4 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp oil

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Dissolve sugar in 1/2 cup water in bowl of mixer.
  3. Sprinkle yeast over water and mix, let stand 10 minutes until foamy.
  4. Add remaining ingredients into mixing bowl.
  5. Mix with dough hook for 6 minutes.
  6. Place in oiled bowl, cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk.
  7. Punch down dough.
  8. Let rise until double in bulk.
  9. Punch down again.
  10. Divide dough into 3 equal parts.
  11. Roll dough into 3 long strands.
  12. Braid the strands, tucking the ends under.
  13. Cover with towel and let double in bulk.
  14. Glaze with maple syrup.
  15. Bake at 400 F for approximately 30 minutes, until golden brown.
  16. The challah is done when it sounds hollow when thumped on the bottom.
