Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or 1/2 cup milk with 2 tsp lemon juice)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and the sugar.
  2. In heavy saucepan, combine butter, shortening, coffee or water and cocoa.
  3. Stir and heat to boiling.
  4. Pour boiling mixture over the flour and sugar in te bowl.
  5. Add the buttermilk, eggs baking soda and vanilla.
  6. Mix well, using a wooden spoon or high speed on an electric mixer.
  7. Pour into a well buttered 17 1/2 by 11 inch jelly roll pan.
  8. Bake at 400F for 20 minutes or until brownies are done in the center.
  9. While brownies bake, prepare the frosting.
  10. In a saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa and milk.
  11. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly.
  12. Remove from heat and mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla, beat until frosting is smooth.
  13. Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as you take them out of the oven.
  14. Cool.
  15. Cut into 48 bars.
