Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp clove
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 egg

Directions:

  1. Combine flour, and next ingredients. Set aside.
  2. Beat shortening and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Beat in molasses, water and egg. Stir in flour mixture until well blended. Cover and chill at least 2 hours.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F Place remaining 3 tablespoons of sugar on wax paper. To prepare cookies, shape heaping tablespoons of dough into balls and roll in sugar. Place about 2-inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
