Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 cups oats
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups dates
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Directions:

  1. Filling:.
  2. Combine all ingredients and simmer until thickened (don't burn) Set aside and cool.
  3. Base:.
  4. Lightly grease a 9x9-inch pan.
  5. Sift and mix together flour and soda.
  6. Combine sugar and oats to flour mixture.
  7. Work in butter with fingertips.
  8. Pat 1/2 of the mixture onto bottom of pan.
  9. Spread filling on patted mixture.
  10. Put remaining mixture on top of filling and pat lightly. Bake in 375°F oven for 45 minutes.
  11. Cut when cool.
