Molasses Doughnuts from Dot's Recipes

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp melted butter or 1 tbsp margarine
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 dash salt
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup sour milk

Directions:

  1. Oil needs to be approximately 4 inches deep.
  2. Use fryer or cast iron Dutch oven.
  3. Mix egg, sugar and butter.
  4. Add molasses and stir.
  5. Add flour and spices.
  6. Stir baking soda into sour milk and add to dough.
  7. Mix in gently and refrigerate for at least two hours.
  8. Turn chilled dough out on floured surface and roll out to 1/2 inch thickness.
  9. Cut out with doughnut cutter and fry, turning once (Do about 4 at a time).
  10. Drain on paper toweling.
  11. Makes 12 doughnuts and 12 doughnut holes.
  12. Roll in cinnamon sugar if you like.
