Greta's Buttermilk Doughnuts

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup cream
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • oil (4 inches) or melted shortening, to deep fry (4 inches)

Directions:

  1. Beat eggs and add cooled melted butter.
  2. Mix well and add sugar and vanilla.
  3. Add dry ingredients and mix.
  4. Add cream and buttermilk.
  5. Cover and leave in the fridge for several hours or overnight.
  6. Spoon out 1/2 mixture to a lightly floured surface.
  7. Return dough to fridge to chill.
  8. Dust rolling pin with flour and roll out to 1/2 in thick.
  9. Cut out and fry.
  10. Fry these at 360 F in cast iron dutch oven or other fryer.
  11. Turn once.
  12. Drain on several layer of paper toweling.
  13. Repeat.
  14. Makes 18 doughnuts & 18 doughnut holes.
  15. These freeze really well (w/o sugar dusting).
  16. While hot, roll in sugar if you like but these are really good plain.
