Traditional Bolognese Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 carrot
  • 1/2 slice bacon
  • garlic clove
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 0.5 (8 oz) can tomatoes
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • 1 pinch sugar
  • 1 pinch dried herbs

Directions:

  1. Peel and chop the onion. Peel and chop or grate the carrot. Chop the bacon. Peel, chop and crush the garlic clove.
  2. Fry the onion and bacon gently in the oil or fat in a saucepan, stirring until the onion is soft (2-3 minutes). Add the minced beef and continue cooking, stirring until it is lightly browned. Add the carrot, tinned tomatoes (or chopped fresh ones), tomato puree (or ketchup), stock cube and water (or the soup) stirring well. Add the salt, pepper, sugar, and herbs.
  3. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20-30 minutes, until the meat is tender.
