Smoky Gouda-Sauced Broccoli

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450°; place a steamer basket in a large saucepan; add water to just below the bottom of the steamer basket.
  2. Bring water to boiling; add broccoli to steamer basket; cover and decrease heat; steam for 6-5 minutes or just until crisp-tender.
  3. Meanwhile, for the sauce, in a medium saucepan, melt the 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat; add onion and garlic; cook until tender.
  4. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper; stir in the milk; cook and stir until thickened and bubbly; gradually add cheese, stirring until melted; taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  5. Transfer broccoli to a 1 1/2 quart au gratin dish or 2-quart square baking dish.
  6. Pour sauce over broccoli; combine breadcrumbs and 2 tablespoons melted butter; sprinkle over sauce.
  7. Bake, uncovered, about 15 minutes or until crumbs are light brown.
