Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup. shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup. sugar
  • 2 unbeaten eggs
  • 1 cup. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 oz. red food color
  • 3 tbsps. cocoa
  • 2 1/4 cup. flour (plain )
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vinegar

Directions:

  1. Make a paste of cocoa, food coloring, cream shortening with sugar and egg.
  2. Combine measured sifted flour with salt, add with buttermilk and vanilla to creamed paste.
  3. Fold in vinegar and soda (stir vinegar and soda with toothpick before mixing with cake) pour batter in 3 8 inch cake pans.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.

  6. Icing
  7. 5 Tbsps. flour
  8. 1 c. sugar
  9. 1 c. butter
  10. 1 c. milk
  11. 1 tsp. vanilla
  12. Cook flour and milk till thick.
  13. Cool.
  14. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until fluffy.
  15. Add to sauce and beat well.
