  2. The Dark Layers
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the brown sugar and butter until very light and fluffy. Add the sour milk and flour alternately to the butter/sugar mixture.
  4. In a small bowl add the raisins, molasses, egg yolks, cinnamon ,nutmeg and cloves. Mix all together before pouring in the dissolved baking soda, and combining. Now pour the mixture in the small bowl into the large bowl, stirring together lightly. Pour into 2 of the prepared cake pans. (Do this at the same time as the 2 White layers) Bake at 350 20 to 25 minutes. When toothpick comes out clean, Cool on racks. Alternate the dark and white and put the layers together with white icing. (I don't know what this could be. ) follow your tastebuds!
  5. The White Layers
  6. In a small bowl, stir together the dry ingredients,:flour, cornstarch , & baking powder. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together. Stir in the eggwhites. Lastly, stir in the sweet milk, and fill the 2 cake pans with the batter.
  7. Note-This is a very old family recipe. My mom's Aunt Nell was known as a fabulous baker in her North Carolinian town. I guesstimate this recipe came from the turn - of- the -century period(between 1890 and 1935). It confuses me that the 3 egg whites aren't Whipped , and that the baking soda is liquified before use.
