Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • sugar , for rolling cookies in before baking
  • slivered almonds

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Pour shortening into mixing bowl and cool. Add 1 cup sugar, molasses and egg; mix well with wooden spoon. Stir in orange peel, crystallized ginger and chopped almonds.
  3. Stir together flour, soda, salt, ginger and cloves; add 1/4 at a time to sugar mixture, mixing well with hands.
  4. With lightly floured hands shape in 1 balls, roll in sugar and place on lightly greased cookie sheets 1 1/2 apart. Flatten slightly and press a slivered almond in the center of each. Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes (do not overbake; cookies should be chewy). Cool on rack.
