Old Fashioned Caramel Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder

Directions:

  1. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, and continue beating.
  3. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Blend well.
  4. Stir in soda which has been dissolved in vinegar.
  5. Add vanilla.
  6. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9 inch layer cake pans.
  7. Bake in 350 degree oven until done (my mom's recipe..I think 30 minutes)
  8. Cook and frost with icing.
  9. FROSTING:
  10. Melt butter in heavy sauce pan.
  11. Add sugar and stir.
  12. To blend well add milk and cook to soft ball stage.
  13. Remove from heat and let stand about 5 minutes.
  14. Add baking powder and beat until smooth and creamy. (The more you beat the creamier the frosting).
  15. Frost cake.
