Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups red lentils
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp chilli powder (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 225 g tomatoes
  • 340 g potatoes
  • 4 cups water
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp oil

Directions:

  1. Rinse the lentils and place them in a saucepan. Grind the cumin seeds an add them to the pan, as well as the salt, chilli and turmeric
  2. Chop the tomatoes and potatoes into fairly small pieces. Add them to the pan. Pour the water over everything, cover, bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for about half and hour
  3. Slice the onions thinly. Chop the garlic finely. Heat the oil in a frying pan and add the onions and garlic. Fry until golden brown
  4. Stir the contents of the frying pan into the lentil mixture and serve over rice
