Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp clove
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Cream sugar and shortning until fluffy.
  3. Beat in egg, then applesauce.
  4. Whisk dry ingredients together.
  5. Add dry ingredients alternating with water.
  6. Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 13 pan.
  7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until cake tests done.
  8. Cool on a rack.
  9. Frost as desired.
