Ingredients:

  • 4 cups wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups white flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Mix dry ingredients.
  3. Stir in enough buttermilk to make the dough soft.
  4. Dust the work surface with wheat flour. Knead the dough until smooth.
  5. Form dough into a circle about 1 1/2 inches thick.
  6. Mark a deep cross in the top with a floured knife.
  7. Put on parchment paper and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes or until bread is browned and sounds hollow when tapped on the base.
  9. Cool on a wire rack and wrap in a clean tea towel to keep soft.
