Homemade Ice Cream - Custard Based

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 quarts whole milk

Directions:

  1. Mix sugar and flour.
  2. Stir in eggs.
  3. Set aside.
  4. Heat milk but do not boil.
  5. Pour hot milk into egg mixture; stir to mix and return to medium heat.
  6. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until mixture thickens.
  7. (Once it comes to boil, it won't thicken any more).
  8. Remove from heat.
  9. Stir in vanilla.
  10. This completes the custard.
  11. Leave plain for vanilla ice cream OR stir in 3 cups mashed fruit of your choice (peaches, strawberries, etc).
  12. Pour custard into ice cream maker canister and follow manufacturer's instructions for making the ice cream.
