  1. Arrange one layer of tomato slices in the bottom of a lightly greased 1 1/2-quart casserole. Combine sugar, salt, and pepper; mix well. Sprinkle tomatoes with about one-third each of sugar mixture, breadcrumbs, and cheese. Repeat layers, omitting cheese from top layer.
  2. Dot butter over top of casserole. Cover and bake at 400° for 1 hour. Add remaining cheese. Bake, uncovered, 5 minutes or until cheese melts.
