Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup butter , margarine , lard or mixture (1/4 cup , 1/4 cup parkay , 1/4 cup lard)
  • 2 cup milk (2% or whole)
  • 3/4 cup sugar deacrease for roliche
  • 5 tsp yeast *heaping tsp
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp instant potatoes *heaping tbsp
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1 tsp sugar *for dissolving yeast
  • 1 whole egg *for roliche; beaten
  • poppy seeds *for roliche

Directions:

  1. Heat milk in microwave for 2 minutes. Add instant potatoes to hot milk mixture. Add shortenings. Mix until melted, cool to warm.
  2. Add yeast to warm water with 1 tsp of sugar.
  3. With Kitchenaid mixer, beat the eggs. Add milk mixture, sugar, and salt. Slowly add 4 1/2 cups flour (1/2-1 cup at a time) until blended then mix on setting #2 for 8 minutes. Dough should be tacky, not too floury; save 1/2 cup flour for rolling.
  4. Preheat oven to 220 degrees. Grease a large Tupperware bowl with butter or margarine. Add 1 cup flour to mixer and mix until incorporated. Put dough in bowl and cover with lid. Set on stove to raise, cover with dish cloth. Let raise for 1 hour or until almost double. Rotate bowl during raising.
  5. Preheat oven to 375-380 degrees. Spray 3 cookies sheets with olive oil or canola spray. Spread table cloth on counter., sprinkle evenly with remaining 1/2 cup flour. Place dough on cloth, pat and roll out (square) to 1/4-1/3 inch thick. Cover with wax paper, let sit 10 minutes (should be soft and airy). Use pizza cutter to cut 3x3 square. Fill with heaping spoonful of filling. Bring opposite corners together and pinch to secure. (For roliche: Pat and roll out 12 inch cirlces 1/4-1/3 inch thick. Slice into pie pieces. Starting at wide end, roll tightly, pinch corner into middle. Brush with 1 beaten egg and sprinkle with poppy seeds.) Cover with wax paper and let raise 10-12 minutes on stove.
  6. Put 3 tablespoons butter in small bowl, melt. Bake at 375-380 degrees for 12-15 minutes, or until gold brown. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter. Cool on racks.
