Ingredients:

  • 12 oz flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 1/2 oz ground almonds
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Directions:

  1. Make the syrup by combining the water, sugar and lemon juice;
  2. Cook over low heat for 3 minutes, remove from the heat and set aside.
  3. Combine the flour, 6 tablespoons olive oil, salt and water. Work the ingredients together to form a thick and workable dough.
  4. Roll the dough out into fairly thin strips, about 2.5 cm (1 ) wide and 10 cm (4 ) long. Seal the two ends of each strip together to form a ring.
  5. Fry the doughnuts in plenty of hot oil. Once they are golden brown, drain on paper towels.
  6. Dip the doughnuts into the syrup. Place on a serving platter and sprinkle with the ground almonds, cinnamon and cloves.
