Ingredients:

  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup hot water

Directions:

  1. Combine molasses, sugar, shortening, and eggs in a large bowl; beat at high speed of an electric mixer until blended. Combine flour, soda, spices, and salt in a small bowl; stir well. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture alternately with hot water, beginning and ending with flour mixture; stir after each addition.
  2. Pour pudding batter into a lightly greased 12- x 8- x 2-inch baking dish. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool slightly; cut into 4- x 3-inch bars. Serve with Lemon Sauce or Hard Sauce.
