Ingredients:

  • 6 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup currants
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk

Directions:

  1. Mix together the dry ingredients and add the currants.
  2. Beat together the eggs,milk and syrup and add to the flour mixture.
  3. Mix all ingredients thoroughly.
  4. Pour into 2 well greased loaf pans and bake in 350 degree oven for about one and half hours.
  5. Cool on a rack.
  6. Wrap tightly in foil and keep for (3) days.
  7. This is a very old English recipe,originating in the Middlesex area of Southern England it's called a 'keeping bread'...the rule is not to cut the bread for at least (3) days after baking,after which you would slice thin and spread with butter and jam or preserves.
