  1. Sift together dry ingredients; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add milk, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened.
  2. Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface, and lightly knead 4 to 5 times.
  3. Roll dough into a 7- x 5-inch rectangle; cut into thirty-five 1- inch squares. Heat 3 to 4 inches of oil to 375°; drop in 6 or 7 squares at a time. Cook 3 minutes on one side or until golden brown; turn and cook other side about 3 minutes. Drain. Serve with cream gravy, if desired.
  4. Note: These are also delicious served with syrup or molasses
