Ingredients:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 4 cups oil
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2-1 tsp chili powder

Directions:

  1. For Sopapillas:.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in the butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the water until the dough is smooth.
  5. Let stand for 20 minutes.
  6. Roll out on a floured board to about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Cut into squares.
  8. Heat oil in deep-fryer to 375 degrees F.
  9. Add a few of the dough squares to the hot oil - do not over crowd.
  10. Fry until golden brown on both sides, pushing the dough under the oil occasionally.
  11. Drain on paper towels, then roll in cinnamon sugar mixture.
  12. Cinnamon Sugar Mixture:.
  13. Mix the ingredients and use to cover the hot sopapillas.
