Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cup sifted flour
  • 2 teasp. baking soda
  • 3 teasp.ginger
  • 1 teasp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 teasp. cloves
  • 1/4 teasp. salt
  • 1/3 cup strong coffee
  • 2 tbsp. anise seed
  • 2 teasp. coriander seed, crushed

Directions:

  1. Cream together shortening and sugar
  2. Beat in egg
  3. Stir in molasses
  4. Sift together flour, soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  5. Add alternately the flour mixture and then coffee...mix well after each
  6. Stir in anise and coriander seed.
  7. Drop teaspoonful onto greased baking sheets 2-inches apart
  8. Bake at 350 F for 8 to 10 minutes cool on a wire rack
  9. Makes 3 1/2 dozen

  13. Top each coolie with frosting and a walnut half
