Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup lard
  • 2 1/2 cups ice water

Directions:

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt; stir well. Cut in lard with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle ice water evenly over flour mixture, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened.
  2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Beat with a rolling pin or mallet for 30 minutes or until blisters appear, folding dough over frequently.
  3. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; flatten and prick with the tines of a fork. Place biscuits on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 500° for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
