Ingredients:

  • 1 package yeast
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup of lukewarm water
  • 4 1/2 cups of sifted flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp virgin oil
  • 4 tbsp poppy seeds

Directions:

  1. Combine-Yeast, sugar & 1/4 cup lukewarm water.
  2. Let stand 5 min.
  3. Sift- flour & salt into a bowl.
  4. Make a well in the center & drop in eggs, oil, remaining water yeast , mixture into it & work.into the flour.
  5. Knead on a floured surface until smooth & elastic.
  6. Place in a bowl & brush the top with a little oil.
  7. Cover with a towel, set in warm place & let rise for 1 hr.
  8. Punch down, & cover again, let rise, until double the bulk.
  9. Divide the dough into 3 equal parts.
  10. Between lightly floured hands roll the dough into 3 strip of equal length.
  11. Braid them together & place in baking pan.
  12. Cover with towel & let rise to double the bulk.
  13. Brush with egg yolk & sprinkle with poppy seeds
  14. Bake 375 degree oven for 50 min.or until browned.
  15. MAKES: 1 very large bread, if you wish, divide the dough in 6 parts & make 2 large loaves or 1 loaf & many small roll.
  16. You may also bake the bread in a loaf pan
  17. Also makes delicious FRENCH TOAST
